US Political News: There is no such thing as downtime in the world of politics, which is why we thought it might be a good idea to play a little catchup with the US political news that happened over the weekend. Let’s get to some of the major headlines.
Former Presidents to Attend Biden Inauguration
One of the least surprising pieces of political news from last week was President Trump announcing that he would not be attending Joe Biden’s inauguration on January 20. Trump will become just the 4th President to skip the proceedings. While he may not be there, Vice President Mike Pence will be, as will several former Presidents, all of whom will take part in a wreath laying ceremony after the inauguration.
Former Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama will take part in the ceremony at the Arlington National Cemetery.
House Democrats Eyeing 25th Amendment
After the horrific events at the Capitol last week, House Democrats almost immediately began talking impeachment of President Trump. They are of the belief that his actions at a nearby rally helped spur the crowd into a frenzy that led to the eventual attack on the Capitol. Over the weekend, though, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that they would instead be looking to vote on a resolution to invoke the 25th Amendment that would remove Trump from the White House.
Pelosi said that the 25th Amendment was preferred over impeachment, as it would lead to the removal of Trump from office immediately. Vice President Mike Pence and his cabinet need to put that process in motion and have been given 24 hours to do so. If they do not act within that time, Pelosi has said that articles of impeachment would then move forward.
Major U.S. Corporations Halt Donations to Republican Lawmakers
The fallout from last week’s events at the Capitol continued over the weekend, with major U.S. Corporations deciding to halt donations to Republican lawmakers who filed objections during the Electoral College certification.
Marriott International Inc. spoke the loudest, with the hotel chain releasing an official statement decrying those who has objected to certification. They were soon followed by the likes of Commerce Bank and Blue Cross Blue Shield.
