US GOVERNMENT SUES GOOGLE AMIDST ALLEGATIONS OF CENSORSHIP IN MASS MEDIA

The ongoing battle between Silicon Valley and the White House escalated today as the US government moved to sue tech giant Google for unlawful competition practices.

The news arrives in the middle of a controversy regarding alleged censorship imposed by social media companies Twitter & Facebook, who recently became more directly involved in the active chastising of “misleading” content. Conservative and Republican voices have since raised their voices to denounce what they refer to as targeted censorship, aimed at curtailing the distribution of information that could potentially harm Biden’s chances in the upcoming presidential election.

The new antitrust complaint issued by the Justice Department speaks of a series of unfair actions allegedly committed by the Google conglomerate, including the effective monopolization of advertisement channels and the allocation of millions of dollars in payments to several device manufacturers.

Google has been the preferred choice of millions of internet users for an online search engine for nearly two decades, after successfully vanquishing media juggernauts AOL and Yahoo during the early run of the 2000s, however, their meteoric rise has also created long-lasting frictions with the competition, who have often remarked the alleged use of unfair business practices in order to maintain a supremacy over a greater piece of a media pie. According to recent studies, Google holds more than 80% of the American search engine market.

The suit submitted by the Justice Department, joined by eleven US States, cites Google’s use of various practices to undermine their competition and gain favourable treatment by other technology developers. These vary between accusations of monopolization of the advertising channels and the execution of juicy payments to select developers, such as Apple and Samsung, intended to keep Google as their default search engine.
