REPUBLICANS SET TO OBJECT RESULTS

Latest Political News – House Republicans Set to Object to Election Results

Republicans Set to Object to Election Results: Next week is a busy one in the world of U.S. politics and it begins on Jan. 3 when the new Congress is sworn in. A couple of days later, we have a pair of Senate runoff elections taking place in Georgia. That will be followed by Congress coming together in a joint session where they will certify the Electoral College results. That takes place on Jan. 6 and it looks as though it may be a contentious day in Congress.

Byron Donalds, a Republican Representative-elect came out on Thursday and announced that he will object to the certification. Donalds took to social media to say that he “cannot in good faith vote to support the certification of the Electoral College results on Jan. 6.”

It would seem that Donalds is not alone in his objection, with as many as 140 House Republicans reportedly set to voice their objections. Even with those numbers, it is a bid that is destined to fail, but it will certainly make for a disruptive day. Those who will choose to object to the Electoral College certification will do so despite there being no hard evidence of widespread voter fraud, which is what President Trump and his base have been claiming since the day of the election.

As far as the Senate goes

The only senator in the latest news is Josh Hawley, who also announced that he will be objecting to the certification. If he does indeed object, he will force a debate and a vote over the objection, making what should be a rather straightforward process more complicated than it needs to be.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has been talking to Republican senators and asking them not to join the growing list of House Republicans who plan to voice their objections. McConnell is calling the vote to certify “the most consequential I have ever cast.”

Certainly, not all Republicans are on board with objecting to the certification process. Ben Sasse, a Republican from Nebraska, denounced those who were planning to object, suggesting that they were “playing with fire.”

The latest political news also has Vice President Mike Pence asking a federal judge to reject a lawsuit brough forward by a Texas Republican that seeks to give the Vice President the authority to overturn the election.
