President Donald Trump has been the face of scrutiny since he lost the presidential election to Joe Biden in November. We all know there has been a ton of divide in the country throughout his term, but his term is about to come to an end. However, the House Democrats have unveiled an article of impeachment against Trump.
The moderate faction of American politics has been a strong minority in the past four years. Biden’s inauguration date is Jan. 20 and this will mark the end of Trump’s time in the White House. This hasn’t stopped Democrats from trying to diminish President Trump’s authority.
Democrats in the House of Representatives are trying to assure that President Trump will never be able to return to Washington in a leadership role ever again. On Monday evening, House Democrats unveiled an Article of Impeachment against Trump.
Second Impeachment Against President Trump
On Monday night, House Democrats started the impeachment process for the second time against President Trump. It’s unclear whether President Trump will be convicted. Trump has less than two weeks in office before Biden takes over the presidential duties.
The House Democrats charged Trump with a single Article of Impeachment. The formal offense was an “incitement of insurrection” because of a speech that Trump gave on Jan. 6. House Democrats believe that his speech incited rioters to break into the US Capitol in an effort to disrupt the counting of the electoral ballots.
Similarly, they also cited Trump for a phone call that he had with Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger. President Trump begged Raffensperger to find votes in favor of the incumbent to overturn the state’s election results.
House Democrats claimed that this was just one of Trump’s countless efforts to alter election results to remain in office.
The House Democrats utilized the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution to support their Article of Impeachment against President Trump. The 14th Amendment does not allow anyone to hold office who has “engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the United States.”
The House is attempting to impeach Trump for the second time. The first came in December of 2019, when the House impeached President Trump, though the Senate did not vote for the impeachment.
President Trump and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi haven’t developed a close bond since 2016 when the incumbent was inaugurated.
Why Impeach Trump?
President Trump doesn’t have a lot of time remaining to lead the country. However, there are rumors that he will be the Republican Party’s presidential nominee in 2024. If Trump is impeached, he will not be able to hold office ever again.
An impeachment trial isn’t a quick process, but House Democrats will be expediting Trump’s trial. A floor vote could take place as early as Tuesday or Wednesday.
If the impeachment vote passes in the House of Representatives, the case would then move to the Senate. The Senate is the final step in the impeachment process. A two-thirds vote in the Senate is required to convict Trump and remove him from office.
In conclusion, a Trump conviction and removal from office would be a true landmark decision. This is unlikely considering that the Senate has never removed a president from office in the history of the United States.
