GOP HAS A MARJORIE TAYLOR GREENE PROBLEM

The Republican party made a rather dramatic shift during the four years that Donald Trump was President; with several members of the GOP happily siding with every statement he made; regardless of whether or not it was based in truth. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene was one of Trump’s strongest allies; making a habit of getting behind far-right conspiracy theories and making political new; by using her social media presence to seemingly endorse violence against Democrats.

As the GOP now tries to mend the divide in their party; they will need to make a decision about what to do with Taylor Greene in a Thursday vote in the House. They will be voting to decide whether to strip the controversial Georgia Republican of her committee assignments. Failing to do so would be seen as most as a sign that the party is in fact defending her actions; which could lead to a further split; as there are some Republicans who would like to see her punished.

Senator Mitch McConnell, the Senate Minority Leader

Is one who had grown weary of her actions, calling Taylor Greene a “cancer” to the party. His comments came shortly after House Democrats put the ball in the GOP court by issuing an ultimatum on this issue; they have asked that the Republicans take care of the business of stripping; Taylor Greene of her duties before they do.

It would appear; though, that she has some support within the House, with House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy coming out and saying that he believes the ultimatum from the Democrats to be nothing more than a “partisan power grab.” All of this highlights how divided the party is at the moment, as they try to decide whether to stay on board with the Trump style of politics or get back to a more tradition form of Conservative governing.

The nature of that battle was on show earlier this week; when House Republicans blocked an attempt by hard-right members of the party to removed Liz Cheney from her leadership role in the House after she voted in favor of impeaching the former President. This is a division that does not appear to have an end in sight, at least in the short term. Get REAL, UNBIASED coverage of the latest political news from our experts at JAZZ Politics & News.
