Latest Political News – Cyber Attacks Pose “Grave Risk” To U.S. Government
As President Trump convened his White House cabinet this week; we all waited to hear some sort of statement made about the recently reveal cyber attacks on the U.S government. With no members of the affected parties; the State Department, the Justice Department, the Department of Defense and the Central Intelligence Agency. Present at the Wednesday meeting.
While the President is remaining tight-lipped about the data breach; which had gone unnoticed for close to a year; the agencies involved are now mobilizing to assess the potential damage of the attack.
Officials said that the situation is more widespread than initially thought, with the government saying that the breach posed “a grave risk to the federal government.”
Furthermore, a look at the President’ daily schedule reveals that there have been no official intelligence briefings since early October.
The White House was quick to point out that while said briefings may not appear on the schedule; they are regularly performed in an unofficial capacity. They went on to say that President Trump was made aware of the hack on Thursday by top intelligence officials.
President-elect Biden Speaks on the Matter
While Trump remains silent, President-elect Biden has gone on the offensive. The Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency announced that Biden and his team had been briefed on the matter; with the President-elect choosing to respond quickly and firmly.
In a statement released on Thursday; Biden said “Our adversaries should know that, as President, I will not stand idly by in the face of cyber assaults on our nation. While Russia has not been formally named as the perpetrator of the data breach; it is widely believed that they are indeed responsible.
The task that the intelligence agencies face now; is figuring out how the hack was able to go undetected for so long. At this point; it seems that there are more questions than answers, but those answers are going to need to come soon.
Senators on both sides; are calling for the White House to issue a stern statement rebuking the hack; but as of yet, all remains quiet. How long it stays that way under the weight of such pressure remains to be seen.
